Obsessed fails to break mold

“You think you’re crazy?  I’ll show you crazy.”  The over-told story of a woman stalking a married man has a new twist with an attitude-filled wife.

The newly released movie “Obsessed” came out April 24, and let me just say, it was something.  Based on the classic story of delusional and obsessed woman gone crazy, hence “Obsessed” lives up to its title.

Derek Charles (Idris Elba), is at the top of his game as an Asset Manager.  He is a successful businessman with a wife and child.  His secretary gets sick from a stomach virus, leaving human resources to hire a temp.

Quite clearly and early on in the movie the temp, Lisa (Ali Larter) falls for Derek and is obviously pulling strings to stay at his office for as long as possible.  She looks through his personal things, screens calls from his wife Sharon (Beyonce Knowles), and creeps on his web information.

Frequently throughout the movie Lisa sexually attacks him and leads his coworkers to believe something is going on between them.  Derek, being a typical man, does not tell anyone about his psychotic temp seducing him and stalking him.

Lisa quits her temp job, and Derek thinks his problem is over.  But what kind of movie could really end that way?

Later, at an out-of-town business conference, she shows up and drugs him.  Of course, the crazy girl manages to get into his room, but what really happened after that isn’t really mentioned.    It seems cliché that all of Lisa’s actions to target and find Derek are so easy.

After a failed attempt at suicide, Lisa is sent away with her sister.  A few months later she returns and resumes her stalking.  Why do the stalkers always come back?  Can’t anyone every keep a close eye on the crazies in the world?

Lisa gets a prime opportunity to strike again, but her plan is only slightly interrupted when Sharon, and not Derek, comes home to find her.  Let the cat fight begin.  This whole scene was hilarious.

I have to say that I am glad to finally watch a movie where the wife beats the psycho up.

Although “Obsessed” had a great role for the wife, it was still the classic and over-told story of the crazy assistant.  Give it a few years, and this movie will be on Lifetime with all the other movies that are exactly the same, except maybe it is not an assistant it is a nanny or a neighbor.

The movie gave me mixed feelings on its quality.  Some parts were laughable, others I found to be unreasonable.  Most of the time I found myself talking to the screen saying,

“Seriously woman are you stupid?  Everyone knows you don’t follow the crazy woman into the attic!”

Moral of the story for this remake of a classic story is, do not hire a temp.  Wait for your real secretary to get better.
