With a sledgehammer slamming down onto stickers and spray paint of red, blue and brown, students paid to release their anger against school rivals while also raising money for a good cause.
Junior Kate Gunderson was the brains behind the event, and she was pleased it was such a hit.
“I had been working to get this project OK’d by (Key Club) advisors, Mr. Clark and the school board for about a year now,” Gunderson said. “It was really cool to see it all come together.”
Gunderson got the car smashing idea at a Key Club Fall Rally last year. She wanted to hold an interesting fundraiser while getting kids in the school more familiar with Key Club.
“It went very well,” Gunderson said. “I really liked the involvement of all different types of kids from our school, and it was fun to see what school everyone wanted to demolish the most.”
A donated car was parked in front of the school during lunch covered with spray paint and stickers representing the school’s rivals: Shanley, Fargo North and Fargo South. Many students paid a dollar per hit or 3 dollars for 5 hits to help demolish the car, earning more than $300 for March of Dimes, a foundation for pregnant women and newborns.
“Hopefully it will become somewhat of a school tradition,” Gunderson said.
