It can be stated without question that change has been the underlying foundation of nearly every aspect of high school life this year. There are new teachers, curriculum and expectations for students.
However, many changes were brought upon the school without prior knowledge or understanding by those being affected. Students are the foundation and building blocks of a school system, and as such, their voices should be heard when major changes in policy are made.
One such change in policy was the arrival of block scheduling in place. The reason for the switch was to give students more options in their course work and the opportunity to take a class during an extended period. However, these measures were put into motion without the assent and proper understanding of students or many of the teachers.
This shows a lack of restraint and consideration from administrative officials to gauge the outcome of the people being affected. More time should be spent contemplating and going over the issues with those involved rather than jumping hastily into action.
The issue that is now at the forefront of most people’s minds is the momentous decision of creating two high schools in the near future. The outcome of this major decision will not only affect hundreds of students, but also the very path that West Fargo High School will take.
With this pending decision in motion, it becomes even more essential for adults and students alike to band together and come up with the best solution possible. Administrative officials need to keep students up to date not only on the decision making process, but also to incorporate their input as much as possible. The future of West Fargo High School depends on it.
