As said by Tampa Bay Ray’s outfielder, Cliff Floyd, “It’s real easy to just fall apart. But the only way to maintain team chemistry is by realizing how important all the other guys are.” Team chemistry, along with talent, has been the backbone of the boys basketball team this season.
While retaining first place in the Eastern Dakota Conference, the team has proven dynamics are important to doing well. New members may prove it difficult to bond as a team; however, this is not always the case. Senior Tyler Gronbeck believes the underclassmen bring excitement with them and aid in making the team so close.
“We’re playing well,” Gronbeck said. “They’re contributing to the team. They work hard in practice to make us better.”
Senior Jason Moch agrees the underclassmen are a good asset to the team.
“It’s kinda good to have some (underclassmen) in there,” Moch said. “It’s just fun seeing them play. They bring a lot of energy.”
One such underclassman is sophomore Chase Farkas. Starting for the first time on varsity this year, Farkas enjoys playing with the team.
“It’s a good learning experience,” Farkas said. “I feel like we have good team chemistry.”
Junior Spencer Flaten also thinks the season is going well due to the team making bonding time.
“We do a lot of stuff after games, like going out to eat,” Flaten said.
Whether upperclassmen or underclassmen, it’s clear the team has its mind set on reaching its ultimate goals: winning EDC and doing well at state. Moch wants to see how far the team can go, and thinks they are going in the right direction to be EDC champions again.
“So far we’re doing pretty well,” he said.
With more games, state coming up and the battle to be first in EDC, the team has a lot on its mind. Head coach Greg Limke tries to keep his team focused and sometimes gives them words of wisdom before the games, telling them to “play hard, play smart, play together and have fun.”
Whether a first time varsity player or a returning player, the boys basketball team players realize how important their teammates are, which allows them to flourish.
