For the second consecutive season Girl’s Volleyball has entered the state tournament undefeated in the EDC. It is also the second season the team has lost at the tournament, losing the state title for the second time.
West Fargo volleyball finished in third place at the state tournament in Minot Nov. 20-22.
Senior Sarah Denne said the team was not happy with the way it finished, but the tournament wasn’t a total loss.
“We were obviously disappointed,” Denne said. “But at least we ended with a win.”
The team lost to Bismarck High in the semi final match, but senior Aryelle Jones said the loss wasn’t just because Bismarck was having a better game.
Bismarck won the first two games 20-25, 16-25. Then West Fargo made a comeback taking the next two games 25-13, 15-21. Then in the final round Bismarck won in a close match 13-15.
“It wasn’t necessarily the other team that beat us, but rather ourselves,” Jones said.
Jones said the team’s own mistakes contributed to the loss.
“We defeated ourselves,” she said. “We made a lot of mistakes on our own side of the court.”
Denne also thinks West Fargo was not playing at its best.
“I just don’t think we played as well as we could have, and Bismarck had a very good game,” Denne said.
The season overall went well according to Denne, who said the team faced some tough competition.
“I think we had a successful season overall,” Denne said. “We handled some tough teams.”
Although few of the younger players dressed, Denne said the girls who dressed showed potential.
“The people that did dress are very talented, so they should have a strong central group,” Denne said.
Jones said the season was a success despite the third place finish.
“I think it was a pretty successful season,” Jones said. “We didn’t accomplish our goals, but we should be proud of what we did accomplish.”
